  • Capsicum
  • Capsicums can be grown successfully in mild and cold climatic conditions. It can withstand frost upto some extent but dies at freezing temperatures. Heavy and continuous rain during flowering and fruiting results in poor fruit set and dropping of flower buds hence are avoided during rains.
  • Capsicums are grown on a wide range of soils but do best in light well drained soil rich in organic matter. The seedlings require transplantation. Once the seeds are sown and the seedlings are 2 - 3 weeks old then they should be transplanted at a distance of 30 - 45 cms between plants and 45 - 60 cms between rows.
  • Once the plants grow tall, staking by means of a wooden stick may be required to keep the plant upright. The fruits are harvested after 85 - 90 days of sowing and continue well upto 5 - 6 months thereafter.
  • Capsicums can be grown in pots too. Prepare the seedlings in small poly bags or cane baskets and transplant them into a 9” - 12” pot after 2 - 3 weeks. You can sow directly into pots too if space is a problem. Sow the seeds and keep in semi-shade till germination, gradually exposed to sun over a period of one week and then always keep in sunlight.
  • The fruits should be snapped or twisted off from the stem. Capsicums are generally harvested mature green.

Step by Step Growth Guide

1. Sowing

Capsicums are mostly grown in areas with Mild Winter to regular Winter temperatures.

They are grown by transplanting method. Seeds sown and seedlings transplanted

For hobby growers, you can sow direct into a pot with minimum diameter of 12". (one plant per pot)

You can choose from a variety of seedling trays to sow the seeds and prepare the seedlings.

Fill the trays / pots with POT-O-MIX (Growing Medium)

Sow 2 seeds per cavity at depth of 0.4 cms deep. Cover lightly. Do not push seeds deeper.

The spacing between plants should be 45 cms and between rows should be 60 cms. So 45 x 60 cms.

Water gently.

Keep the tray / pot in shade till the seeds germinate.

2. Nurturing

Capsicum seeds will germinate in about 4 - 6 days. Gradually expose them to sunlight over a period of next 10- 15 days.

Transplant the seedlings after 25 days of sowing. You can tranplant to raised / seed beds or in a pot if doing at home.

A day prior to transplanting, feed PLANT STARTER (shock absorber, root enhancer). Once transplanted then feed for 2 more days.

Regular fertilisation should start 10 days after transplanting and continue at every 15 days interval. You can choose from ORGANIC or INORGANIC options.

The plant becomes heavy once it starts bearing fruits and may not be able to stand upright. You might need to provide a support in the form of a stake. It can be bambo or any metal. Just insert the stake in the soil next to the main stem and tie them together so it lends support.

Capsicums are ready for harvest in about 85 - 90 days from sowing or 60 -65 days from transplanting.

Once a the desired size is achieved and fruits dark green colour then they are ready. Do not pull or tug the fruits as it might break the branches. Use secateurs to cut the pepper from the plant.

Harvesting can continue for 4 - 6 months more.
