  • Turnip
  • Trump is a cool season crop and resistant to frost. Hot weather and inadequate water results in deterioration of root quality, roots become woody, tough and bitter in taste.
  • Trump grows on a wide range of soils provided they are supplied adequately with organic matter. Tumip being a root crop the soil should be deep ploughed. In order to obtain early and higher percentage of germination there should be adequate soil moisture at the time of sowing
  • The seeds are sown at a distance of 10-15cms between rows and 15-20cms between plant. Regular watering is required. It being a root crop is generally not advisable for pot growing, however a deep height pot can be taken to saw the seeds if needed.
  • Turnips are ready for harvesting within 70-80 days of sowing. Fully developed roots are harvested. It is done by pulling the roots. They are then washed and cleaned in water.

Step by Step Growth Guide

1. Sowing

Turnip can be sown by direct method.

Take a pot preferably rectangular with a minimum depth of 10" - 12". Fill it with POT-O-MIX.

If you wish to grow on seed / raised beds then prepare the seedbed (Refer to growing through seeds guidelines)

Sow the seeds at a depth of 0.6 cms. Cover lightly.

In pots sow at a distance of 15 cms apart and if in ground then keep 20 cms between plants as well as rows.

Water gently.

Provide shade till they germinate.

2. Nurturing

Turnip seeds will germinate in 4 - 6 days. Gradually expose to full sunlight.

Since they are grown in Winter Months, ensure they receive full sunlight.

Water every alternate days.

Once the plants are 30 days old then start fertilisation. Choose from ORGANIC or INORGANIC options.

Harvesting can be done in about 80 days of sowing.

Gently pull out the turnips along with the stems and the leaves.
