Tulsi

  • Tulsi
  • It is a warm season crop.  It grows very freely anywhere.
  • Most kinds of soils are suitable for its cultivation provided there is no water logging.  The Seedlings can be grown directly too but it is advisable to transplant them.  Once the seeds germinate and seedlings are 15-20 days old, one can transplant them into the pot or ground.  The spacing should be 30 cm between plants as well as rows.
  • Tulsi can be grown in pots too.  You can grow it in a 6” or a 9” pot.  Either sow the seeds (3-4) directly and keep one healthy seedling or use a transplanted seedling.  Keep the pot in shade till germination and gradually expose to sun over a period of one week and then always keep in sunlight.
  • The main use of the plant is for leaves which are generally ready for plucking within 45-50 days.

Step by Step Growth Guide

1. Sowing

Tulsi can be grown by direct method in pots or on raised / seed beds.

Take a pot with minimum diameter of 8". Fill it up with POT-O-MIX (Growing Medium)

If on seed beds then prepare the seedbed (Refer to Growing through seeds guidelines)

Sow the seeds at a depth of 0.3 cms. The seed are very tiny so take care that they are not sown deep.

Water very gently.

If growing on raised beds then keep a distance of 30 cms X 30 cms between plants as well as rows.

Provide shade till they germinate.

2. Nurturing

Tulsi seeds will germinate in 7 - 10 days. Gradually expose them to full sunlight in next 6 - 7 days.

Normally tulsi leaves are eaten hence we suggest use of BIOGRO for fertilisation and hearlty growth. Apply every 20 days to maintain lush growth.

Tulis leaves are ready for harvest in 45 - 50 days. Harvest the leaves that are little dry and crispy.

Do not over harvest.

Regular proming of growing tips and flowers is needed to achieve a fuller growth.

The plant continues to grow for a very long time.
