  • Papaya
  • Papaya is a tropical crop. It grows best in warm climate conditions and plenty of sunshine.
  • It grows well in the soil with good fertility and drainage. The location should be free from frost, wind, flooding and drought. It is advisable to transplant seedlings. Sow the seed either in beds or small plastic bags. Once the seedlings are 15-20 cms height ie. About 2-3 months of sowing then you can transplant them into the final location in the field.
  • The seedlings must be watered sufficiently several hours before transplanting to prevent willing during transplanting The seedlings are planted at a distance of 6 (180 cm) between plant as well as rows. It is better to plant papaya at an angle 45 from the ground to make the harvest operation easier and wind resistance stronger.
  • Papaya plants are heavy feeders. They require adequate quantities of fertilizers (NPK) to give proper yields. Irrigations should be done frequently to maintain a steady growth. Drainage should be excellent especially during rains to prevent root damage. It is recommendable that stakes are used to support the plants to prevent plants from failing due to fruit weight and also during heavy winds.
  • It is necessary to remove the weeds, the side shoots and deride leaves as soon as possible to promote the fruit-set. The variety in this packet is a hermaphrodite variety i.e. Males and female flowers on the same plant. All the plants bear fruit.
  • There may be little percentage that do not bear it but it's acceptable due to climate conditions. Papaya can be grown in pots too. Once planted in an 18" pot is good enough.
  • The fruits are ready for harvesting in 9 months sowing. They are usually harvested when the skin turns a little yellow. Generally, the plants yield best in the first 2 years.

Step by Step Growth Guide

1. Sowing

Papaya can be grown all year round. They are grown by transplanting method.

You can sow in a big pot / container with minimum of 18" diameter. Fill it with POT-O-MIX.

The seedling are prepared in polythene bags (8X10 cms) and later transplanted on raised / seed beds.

The seeds should be sown at a depth of 1 cm. Cover well.

Watering should be done everyday, preferably in the mornings.

2. Nurturing

The seeds germinate in about 10 - 12 days. Control the watering from now. Do not overwater.

Once the seedlings are 15 to 20 cms tall (approx 2 months) then they need to be transplanted on raised / seed beds

you can make pits of 60 cm X 60 cm X 60 cms size and transplant the seedlings into it.

Water lightly. Later too ensure that there is no water clogging. The soil should drain freely.

In summers water every 2 days and in winter every 5 - 6 days. In monsoon no need to water unless there is a dry spell of over 8 - 10 days.

Maintain regular weeding around the plants

Fertilisation can start 30 days after transplanting. Spray BAHAAR and for soil fertility use BIOGRO.

Harvesting begins by the end of 9th Month (approx 250 - 280 days).

Papaya will bear fruits for another 2 - 3 years. After that the quantity and quality will suffer.

Harvest when the fruit is still green but fully developed. Let it ripen in straw. If you want good size and quality then it is advisable to thin out some fruits.

Papaya and quality bears fruits throughout the year under mild tropical conditions.
