  • Carrot is a cool season-crop, but very low 3 temperatures are detrimental to its growth. The fruit colour turns pale and sometimes the plant goes into seeding.
  • Carrot thrives best on deep, friable loam soils. This is necessary for penetration of roots into the soil. In heavy soils, the roots become rough and coarse as they can not penetrate the hard soil evenly. Carrots are sown directly. No need to transplant. Prior to sowing, soil should be prepared well by deep. ploughing to ensure softness for root penetration and growth. The seeds are sown at the distance of 10 cm between plants and 15 cm between rows.
  • The seeds in this packet are of early nantes variety. These are well shaped, orange in colour, cylindrical in shape with a stumped end. The skin is thin and the flesh is sweet.
  • Prior to sowing the seeds are rubbed to remove fine hairs. The soil should have sufficient moisture for proper and quality roots. Carrots are not grown in pots as it is not practical. They are grown in the ground only.
  •
  • Carrots are ready for harvest within 60-70 days from the time of sowing. When carrots are fully mature and ready for lifting, the outer leaves begin to wilt and the remaining foliage curls up. Harvesting is done immediately. Pulling of carrot roots becomes easy when the ground is watered lightly, 24 hours prior to pulling. For harvesting, garden fork or spade may be used to loosen the carrot from the soil and then pulled out with the foliage.

Step by Step Growth Guide

1. Sowing

Carrot can be sown directly. No need to transplant.

If in pots then take a pot of minimum 12 -14" depth.

Fill the pot with POT-O-MIX (Growing Medium)

Prepare the raised / seed bed if you wish to grow carrot in the ground. (Refer to Growing through seeds guidelines)

In pots or ground, sow 2 seeds per hole of 0.6 cms depth. In pots keep spacing at 10-15 cms apart. In ground sow at 20 cm X 20 cms apart.

Water lightly and keep in shade till germination.

2. Nurturing

Carrot seeds will germinate in about 6 - 8 days.

Good seedlings will be ready within 12- 15 days. Keep one per hole and discard the other

The seedling should get proper sunlight for at least 6 - 8 hours a day in winter.

Watering should be done daily and well enough.

Fertilisation can start from 20 - 25 days onwards. Feed fertiliser with high phosphorus and potassium contents. It ensure better root formation. You can choose from ORGANIC or INORGANIC options.

Carrot roots are ready for harvest in about 60 - 70 days from sowing

Once mature, the tip of the root shows above the soil, though not always. Best is to dig out a bit and check.

Loosen the soil around the root, grip the leaves and the root firmly and gently pull it out. Cut the top leaves and keep around 1" above the roots. Wash, clean and enjoy.
